When the Second Continental Congress met they talked about what was best for their country. After discussing many different options the Second Continental Congress (Phew! That took soooooo long to write! It took me about a minute to write it!) decided to choose five men to write a statement saying that (only) men were free. Women or slaves were not included. (Oh come on! It had to be MEN ONLY! Yes I know, men were thought better, smarter, more capable, blah blah blah! Who cares?!) The statement called the Declaration of Independence was sent to the King. And you find out the rest of the story for yourself. Okay?

The Second Continental Congress sent five very important men to write a very important document called ''The Declaration of Independence. Those five very important men were: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Livingston, Roger Sherman. They wrote this to show that they want freedom for the people and that they want liberty. The first part of the Declaration of Independence is called the preamble and it goes like this: We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of our liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this constitution for the United States of America.
